MARC Requirements for Fulcrum collections

MARC Requirements for Fulcrum collections

Required by Fulcrum

In order to ensure that our automated processes can ingest and assign MARC records correctly, all records should have the following:

  • 024: First Indicator must be '7'.

    • If the title has a DOI:

      • $a should contain the DOI (not the full DOI URL). This should match what’s in 856$u minus 'https://doi.org/'.

      • $2 should be ‘doi’.

    • If the title does not have a DOI:

      • $a should contain the Handle (not the full Handle URL). This should match what’s in 856$u minus 'https://hdl.handle.net/'.

      • $2 should be ‘hdl’.

Required by RDA and D&I Services

The following are required by MARC/RDA and for indexing and discovery services (OCLC, EBSCO, ProQuest):

  • 001: must not include the OCLC Control Number. The organization code 'MiU' or 'MIU' may be included.

  • 006 (for titles with accompanying materials)

  • 007

  • 020: eISBNs should be in subfield $a; print ISBNs must be in subfield $z. For the formats in subfield $q, we recommend the following controlled vocabulary:

    • ebook

    • paper

    • hardcover

  • 043: Include when geographic locations are part of the subject headings.

  • 856 $u must contain the full URL as it appears under 'Citable Link' on the book's landing page on Fulcrum. Optionally, $z may include 'Electronic access restricted; authentication may be required:'. For multi-volume works, use separate 856 fields for each volume.

Requested Fields

The following are requested both for considerations of quality and for consistency with cataloging practice among Fulcrum-hosted collections:

  • 050: Library of Congress Call Number

  • 082: Dewey Decimal Classification Number

  • 655 \4$a: Include ‘Electronic books’.

  • 776: Optional. $t with title should also be included. If print version is noted in the 588, there is no need for the $i.

Delivery

Unless otherwise indicated, MARC records should be uploaded as individual files (in .xml or .mrc format), with a filename based on the ebook ISBN, e.g. 9781407355344.xml.
