Let’s make a book! This TOC includes the full process of bringing a print book (and usually, an eBook or OA format) from final manuscript through to publication. Please note that hosted books may not require all of these services.

Pre-Production

  1. Project Transmittal/Launch meeting

  2. Assign ISBN to print and/or ebook (if not already supplied)

  6. Send Cover Design Brief to cover designer*

  7. Create Asana task

  8. Create TMM record

  9. Request LoC PCN

  10. Create a JIRA ticket for Fulcrum resources (if needed)

  11. Send vendor quote and schedule to editor for approval

  13. Enter all schedule dates in Asana task

  14. Send schedule to author(s)

Production

Design Sample

  1. Receive design sample from Newgen and review

  2. Send design sample to editor for approval

  3. Design sample approved

Front Cover

  1. Receive front cover ideas from cover designer*

  2. Send front cover ideas to editor*

  3. Send front cover feedback to cover designer (repeat steps 1 & 2 as needed)*

  4. Front cover approved by editor*

  5. Send front cover to author(s) for minor text changes only*

  6. Front cover approved

  7. Add front cover JPEGs for print and ebook to I:\UMP\webapp\umpweb\covers

  8. Create Fulcrum monograph page

    1. E-mail author(s), editor, and marketing team the link

    2. For Lever titles, this step is done during post-production tasks

Copyediting

  1. Receive copyedit from vendor and review

  2. Send copyedit to author(s)

  3. Receive copyedit feedback from author(s) and review

  4. Send copyedit feedback to vendor

Typesetting

  1. Receive typeset PDF from vendor and review

  2. Send typeset PDF to author(s)

  3. Receive typeset PDF feedback from author(s) and review

  4. Send typeset PDF feedback to vendor

  5. Receive final typeset PDF from vendor and review

  6. Send final typeset PDF to author(s)*

  7. Final typeset PDF approved

  8. Final interior files delivered from vendor

Full Cover Spread

  1. Send case design template, barcode, and back cover copy to cover designer

  2. Receive full cover spread from designer and review

  3. Send full cover spread to editor and author(s) for approval

  4. Full cover spread approved

Print Proofs

  1. Upload final interior PDF and full cover spread PDF to IBI and request print proofs

  2. Receive print proofs and review

  3. Confirm print proofs are approved with the editor

ePub + Fulcrum

  1. Receive ePub from vendor and review

  2. Upload print interior PDF and ePub to Fulcrum monograph page

  3. QC ePub on Fulcrum

  4. Update Fulcrum w/ final back cover copy from cover spread

  5. Update JIRA ticket for Fulcrum work (if applicable)

Post-Production

  1. Using actual page count, double-check IBI cost estimator and update TMM if the price has changed

  2. Update TMM w/ final specs (for every format)

  3. Confirm Eloquence verification and Send Metadata to Eloquence (for every format)

  4. Upload final files to BiblioVault and order PDF Processing and web-ready PDF

  5. Create MARC record request

  6. Register DOI using Crossref web form

  7. Via JIRA, ask Tim to add the OA [ISBN] to Product [Press name] on Fulcrum so the book will appear in KBART

  8. Create Google Play audiobook*

Publication

  1. For titles with print runs, release stock from CDC in CISPUB

  2. Mark print version active in TMM day before the POD pub date

  3. Publish OA version on Fulcrum (make public)

  4. Enter OA URL in TMM and Mark OA Active

  5. Add Title to Discount Code in CDC CartMan

  6. Add book to imprint’s homepage

  7. Notify editor, marketing, and author(s) of book release

    1. For Lever titles, do this 1 week before pub date

  8. Add book to the MPS Releases, 2020-Present spreadsheet

Post-Publication

  1. Close JIRA ticket (if applicable)

  2. Order comp copies for the author according to contract

    1. The editor completes this step for ACP titles

  3. Send 1 copy to the UM Library and 2 copies to the Library of Congress (LoC)

  4. Notify Jason that the project is ready for invoicing*

  5. Make sure final production files are on shared drive for archive

  6. One week after pub date, check availability on Amazon and MPS website in case there are problems

  7. One month after pub date, check aggregators to confirm title is included

*These steps do not apply to DPCs for Lever Press titles
